Active Microsoft 365 account (Copilot licence required on the day); basic familiarity with Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams

What it covers

Participants get hands-on practice using Microsoft 365 Copilot inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook through realistic workplace scenarios. The training covers prompt construction, output refinement, and the data-boundary rules that keep sensitive information inside the corporate tenant. By the end, each participant leaves with a personal productivity playbook of validated Copilot patterns for their specific role. Delivered as a facilitated workshop with live demos and guided exercises, requiring an active M365 Copilot licence.

What you'll be able to do

  • Write effective Copilot prompts that produce usable first drafts in Word and PowerPoint without multiple correction rounds
  • Use Copilot in Excel to generate, explain, and audit formulas and surface trends in tabular data
  • Configure and apply Teams meeting intelligence to capture decisions and action items automatically
  • Explain Microsoft's data boundary model and apply sensitivity labels to prevent confidential content from leaking through Copilot responses
  • Assemble a personal role-specific playbook of at least five validated Copilot workflows to use from day one

Topics covered

  • Copilot in Word: drafting, summarising, and rewriting documents
  • Copilot in Excel: data analysis, formula generation, and insight spotting
  • Copilot in PowerPoint: slide generation from outlines and existing documents
  • Copilot in Teams: meeting summaries, action-item extraction, and chat catch-up
  • Copilot in Outlook: email drafting, thread summarisation, and scheduling assistance
  • Prompt engineering fundamentals for M365 contexts
  • Microsoft 365 data boundaries, permissions, and sensitivity labels
  • Building a personal Copilot productivity playbook

Delivery

Typically delivered in-person or as a live virtual session over one full day (6–8 hours including breaks). Approximately 70% of time is hands-on exercises; 30% is facilitated demonstration and discussion. Each participant needs their own M365-Copilot-enabled device. Pre-work includes a short self-assessment to tailor exercises to role types present. Materials include a slide deck, a printed/PDF prompt-pattern card, and a digital productivity playbook template. A 30-day follow-up Q&A channel is recommended to reinforce adoption.

What makes it work

  • Provision licences and validate tenant configuration at least one week before the session
  • Segment exercises by role type so participants practise Copilot on tasks they recognise from their own work
  • Appoint internal Copilot champions who attended the training to run short weekly 'tip-of-the-week' messages in Teams
  • Set a 30-day usage review using Microsoft Viva Insights or the M365 admin adoption dashboard to track and celebrate progress

Common mistakes

  • Scheduling the training before Copilot licences are provisioned, so participants cannot follow along with live exercises
  • Treating the workshop as a one-size-fits-all demo instead of tailoring exercises to the actual roles in the room (finance vs. HR vs. sales)
  • Ignoring data governance setup beforehand — sensitivity labels and permission scopes are often misconfigured, causing confusing or blocked Copilot responses during the session
  • Expecting immediate productivity gains without a follow-up adoption loop; most usage drops off within two weeks without reinforcement

When NOT to take this

This training is not the right fit when the organisation has not yet decided whether to purchase Copilot licences — the entire session depends on live tool access, and a conceptual walkthrough without hands-on practice delivers little lasting value.
