Audience
Operations leads, team managers, and power users at 10-50 person companies already using Slack daily
Prerequisites
Participants should have an active Slack workspace with at least basic user experience; Slack AI subscription (or trial) required on the workspace

What it covers

A hands-on workshop teaching operators at 10-50 person companies how to use Slack AI's channel recaps, thread summaries, and search answers effectively. Participants configure Workflow Builder automations enhanced with AI triggers, set up shared-channel etiquette guidelines, and establish knowledge-retention patterns so institutional knowledge doesn't disappear into chat threads. The session is highly practical: attendees leave with configured workflows, a team-ready Slack etiquette guide, and a repeatable process for onboarding new hires via saved summaries.

What you'll be able to do

  • Configure and activate Slack AI channel recaps and thread summaries for your team's existing channels
  • Write effective search queries that surface accurate AI-generated answers from workspace history
  • Build at least one Workflow Builder automation with AI-assisted steps to handle a real recurring task
  • Draft and publish a shared-channel etiquette guide tailored to your team's communication habits
  • Implement a knowledge-retention process so key decisions and context are never lost in old threads

Topics covered

  • Slack AI channel recaps and thread summaries: setup and daily use
  • AI-powered search answers and how to phrase queries effectively
  • Workflow Builder: building AI-enhanced automations for recurring tasks
  • Shared-channel etiquette and naming conventions for small teams
  • Knowledge-retention patterns: pinning, canvases, and saved summaries
  • Onboarding new hires using Slack AI-generated context
  • Privacy and data considerations when enabling Slack AI

Delivery

Delivered live, either in-person or via video conference (Zoom/Teams). Participants work inside their own Slack workspace throughout, so hands-on ratio is approximately 70% practice, 30% instruction. A shared Slack sandbox channel is set up before the session for exercises. Materials include a pre-session workspace audit checklist, a Workflow Builder template library, and a post-session etiquette guide template. Remote delivery requires screen-share access and Slack AI enabled on the workspace at least 48 hours before the session.

What makes it work

  • Appoint a Slack champion in the team who reviews and iterates workflows monthly
  • Define a small set of canonical channels before training so AI recaps are meaningful from day one
  • Pair the workshop with a 30-day check-in to review which automations are actually used and which can be retired
  • Embed Slack AI usage norms into the employee handbook or onboarding checklist so habits persist with new hires

Common mistakes

  • Enabling Slack AI without establishing channel naming or archiving conventions first, making recaps noisy and unhelpful
  • Treating AI summaries as a replacement for structured documentation, leading to knowledge decay over time
  • Building complex Workflow Builder automations before simpler manual processes are proven and stable
  • Ignoring privacy settings and inadvertently exposing sensitive HR or financial channel content to AI features

When NOT to take this

A team that has not yet standardised on Slack as its primary communication hub — if half the team still operates primarily via email or Microsoft Teams, this workshop will create friction rather than value and should be deferred until the tooling consolidation decision is made.
