How RICE Scoring Works
RICE is a prioritization framework developed by Intercom to help teams make objective decisions about which initiatives to pursue.
The Formula
R×I×C/E
Reach × Impact × Confidence ÷ Effort = RICE Score
Reach
The number of people or events per time period. For example, "500 customers per quarter" or "1,000 transactions per month." Use real data when possible.
Impact
How much will each person be affected? Use a multiple-choice scale: 3 = Massive, 2 = High, 1 = Medium, 0.5 = Low, 0.25 = Minimal. This prevents over-optimistic estimates.
Confidence
A percentage reflecting how confident you are in your estimates. 100% = backed by data, 80% = reasonable estimate, 50% = a gut feeling. This keeps uncertainty honest.
Effort
The total amount of work estimated in person-months. Include design, engineering, testing, and any other resources. Higher effort means lower priority, all else being equal.
