What is Bets, Themes, and Initiatives?
A three-level hierarchy that translates strategic bets into roadmap themes and the initiatives a team will actually execute.
Bets are strategic — three to seven plays the company is making this year. Themes group related work under each bet (e.g., 'reduce time-to-value for new customers'). Initiatives are the discrete, scorable units of work that ladder up to themes. The hierarchy is what makes prioritization defensible: every initiative on the roadmap can be traced upward to a bet the leadership team agreed on. Without it, the roadmap collapses into a feature wishlist no one can sequence.
