Chapter 6 of 14

Bets

A bet says why you run these initiatives, in one sentence a committee understands. Three to five at a time, with a metric, readings, and a date to decide.

Write a bet

Bets in the menu, then New bet. Three required fields: the Title (one sentence, an action verb), the Hypothesis ("We bet that…") and the Expected result. Optional: How we will know, with a Start, a Target and a Unit; the Net gain aimed at, per year; We decide on (a date); the Owner.

Five active bets is the maximum. At five, New bet is disabled: confirm or abandon one. With a start and a target, each reading says where the bet stands.

The bets page
Each bet: its state, its hypothesis, its metric and its bar, its initiatives, what is missing to cover the target.

Follow a bet

Each row gives the bet's state (Active, To decide when the date has passed or the target is reached, Confirmed, Abandoned), the hypothesis, the metric "start → last", and a bar: "n % of the way" when there is a start and a target, otherwise delivery, "n initiatives delivered out of m".

  • Add a reading: a Value, a Date, a Note (where the figure comes from, what changed). The Readings history shows under the bet.
  • Attach initiatives: tick those that serve this bet; the others keep theirs. An initiative can also be attached from its page (Bet line) or from the list (selection, then Attach to a bet).
  • The gain line compares what is aimed at per year with what the attached business cases have recorded, promised, or make possible: "… is missing" or "The target is covered."
  • Up and Down order the bets.

Decide

When the date has passed or the target is reached, the bet says The date has passed. or The target is reached. and offers Confirm or Abandon. If a committee opens a session at that moment, the bet arrives there as a decision: Do we confirm "…"? or Do we stop "…"?, and closing the session applies the answer. A confirmed bet stays visible on the home page; an abandoned one leaves it.
